Arash Ghafoori , Executive Director, Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth

Arash Ghafoori is the Executive Director of the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth (NPHY), Southern Nevada’s most comprehensive service provider for homeless teens (www.nphy.org). With a diverse background in international business and economics, Arash brings a unique perspective to the homeless services field: before leading NPHY, Arash worked as an Economic Consultant at the Theodore Roosevelt Institute, a William S. Boyd Law School Research Fellow at University of Nevada Las Vegas, a Manager of Business Development at Walker Engineering, and a Research Analyst for the United Way of Southern Nevada. During his tenure as Executive Director of NPHY, Arash has led an agency-wide overhaul and rejuvenation, bringing national best practices to NPHY’s programs, enhancing internal policies and procedures, diversifying funding streams, improving outcomes, managing solid community relations, and aligning the organization’s operations with sound business practices. Under Arash’s strategic leadership, NPHY is currently serving more homeless youth clients more efficiently and effectively than ever before.

Active in the national and local movement to end youth homelessness, Arash currently serves as the Co-Chair of the Southern Nevada Homelessness Continuum of Care Board and sits on the National Safe Place Advisory Board, the Las Vegas Downtown Achieves Leadership Council, the City of Las Vegas Public Safety – Law Enforcement/Homelessness Committee, and a variety of oversight and working groups dealing with issues affecting homeless youth in Southern Nevada. Passionate about policy and systems-level-thinking, Arash holds a joint B.A. in International Relations and Political Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an M.A. in Economics from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Born to a Nicaraguan mother and a Persian father, Arash speaks English, Spanish, Farsi, and French. He is a graduate of Bank of America’s Neighborhood Excellence Leadership Program for Executive Directors, was honored in 2014 as a “40 Under 40” business trailblazer by Vegas Inc and distinguished as one of 100 Men of Success by MyVegas Magazine, and is a current participant in the Jameson Fellows leadership development program. Arash enjoys working in environments created by the synergistic intersection of community, business, and policy.

Announcements:

Debunking: Josh Satterlee announced that Mitchell Horst's presidential debunking will be June 30th at Anthem Country Club. You should receive an invitation in the mail. Please RSVP or sign-up in the book.

Feed the Homeless: Karl Maisner announced will be June 29th at Christ Episcopal Church at the corner of Maryland Parkway and St. Louis. The food preparation begins at 5:00 p.m. and the Club should be done by 6:30 p.m. Tom mentioned there is a need for men's, women's and children's clothing. He also asked if someone would take up the annual duties to picking up the food and Adrienne Cox volunteered (thanks Adrienne!!).

PAY YOUR BILL! It's really easy!  Reminder: It is your duty to keep up to date on invoices and up-to-date bills will be sent to all members. The Club recently instituted on-site credit card payment so any member can pay their bill at any meeting. If you don’t know how much you owe, just ask Elaine (she’s keeping a list and checking it twice).

George Hansel Essay Runner-Up

Tom Martin introduced this year's district George Hansel Essay Runner-up, and granddaughter, Baylea Clayton whom read her powerful and interesting essay about how she took responsibility for a very tough personal situation with her friends and fellow athletes. She was awarded a $500 check by the Club.

Paul Harris Fellows

Four Paul Harris Fellowships were awarded to Dalton and Aiden Lewis as well as Carter and Holden Pope, all grandsons of Bruce Pope. In turn, Bruce Pope was recognized as a Major Donor to the Rotary Foundation as he has awarded 10 or more Paul Harris Fellows during his membership with Las Vegas Southwest Rotary Club. Rotarian of the Month

Bruce Pope was also recognized as June's Las Vegas Southwest Rotary Rotarian of the Month. His contributions to the Club this year and in years past were recounted by a number of fellow Rotarians.

June 20 Program

Richard Reed, founder, Las Vegas WON Rotary Club

Richard Reed spoke to the Club about the founding of  Las Vegas WON Rotary Club which is a virtual/digital Club which makes Rotary membership easier and more affordable. It is intended to attract younger professionals to Rotary. It has been extremely successful as it was the largest Club to be chartered, ever and has been extremely active since it was chartered in early April of this year.
