Luciano de Sylva

District 5300 Governor 2016-17

Luciano “Lu” de Sylva started his professional career as a businessman and has owned several successful businesses. Attracted to the idea of a career in service to others, Lu decided on the field of education and pursued graduate work to earn his teaching credential. He then taught at intermediate and high schools in Colorado before moving to California where he continued his career in school administration and academia. Always involved in the community and with a personal commitment to help others, Lu served as a reader for the blind, a Regional Program Evaluator for the United Fund and Chair of the Community Holiday Basket Program, which he brought to the Rotary Club as a partnership.

Lu joined Rotary in 1983 and has been actively involved at the Club and District level ever since. He served as President of the Rowland Heights Club in 1990-91 followed by a term as Governor’s Representative. Lu became a member of the Rotary Club of Walnut Valley in 1996 and served as President three times. He has also been Assistant Governor. District Club Service Chair, District Trainer, Foundation Mentor, 4-Way Speech Contest Chair, Rotaract Chair, and has served on the Ambassadorial Scholarship and Peace Conference Committees. A multiple Paul Harris Fellow, Lu enjoys Rotary travel and hands on service. In addition to continuous local community service activities, he has served on a Rotoplast Team to Guatemala in and distributed wheelchairs in Hermosillo and Guaymas Mexico. Lu and his sweetheart Hazel have been married for 35 years. They are committed to Rotary and look forward to the many opportunities that will be presented to be a gift to the worl

Feed the Homeless: Tom Martin announced to the Club Feed the Homeless will be at Christ Episcopal Church (2000 S Maryland Pkwy, Las Vegas, NV 89104) beginning at 5:00 p.m. the lAugust 31. You can sign-up in the book or contact Tom or Karl.

Andy Katz Invitational Golf Tournament: Jim Andres gave an overview of the First Annual Andy Katz Invitational Golf Tournament benefiting the Andy Katz Memorial Scholarship Fund at The UNLV Foundation. The tournament will be held at Rhodes Ranch Golf Club on October 27th. Jim indicated early-bird sign-ups will be extended till the end of the month for Rotarians. The Club will be sponsoring the tournament and will have four participants per the sponsorship. To learn more or sign-up to attend please visit

Melissa Copeland Homecoming Party: Adrienne Cox announced that Melissa Copeland is returning to Las Vegas and a few of the Rotarians are throwing her a welcome back party at Rounders in Henderson Sunday, August 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. A sign-up can be found in the book.

PAY YOUR BILL! It's really easy!  Reminder: It is your duty to keep up to date on invoices and up-to-date bills will be sent to all members. The Club recently instituted on-site credit card payment so any member can pay their bill at any meeting. If you don’t know how much you owe, just ask Elaine (she’s keeping a list and checking it twice).

Football Squares: Eric Colvin announced that their are still football squares available. Each square is $100 for the entire season with payouts for quarters, halves and game scores. Half of the proceeds will go directly to LVSW Rotary initiatives. To learn more, please contact Eric.

Scholarship Recipient: Maelob Enokenwa was introduced by Tom Martin. Maelob is one of our Club's scholarship recipients and is a sophomore at UNLV working to go to medical school.


Wally Emery: Wally took a long RV trip all over the Western United states which included some time in Montana with his daughter and a trip to Vancouver. He also explained he has a fourth Rounders location on the drawing board but it is early in the process. He was recognized $100.

Ed Guthrie: Ed was recognized $100 for his 43rd anniversary with his wife Cheryl. He said that Opportunity Village is looking to expand on Craig Road where they bought land from BLM. In addition, he explained that the Englestads have been big supporters over the years recognized CES's contributions through the coordination of the LVCVA for solar improvements on their Buffalo campus.

Ted Henderson: Ted openly solicited a recognition of $100 for his 49th wedding anniversary which will be celebrated on August 29.

Joanne Blystone gave a gold mine gifts from up North, Karen Strawn gave a bracelet and Wally Emery gave a refrigerator magnet from his RV trip.

Rossi Ralenkotter, CEO/President, Las Vegas Convention and Visitor Authority

Rossi Ralenkotter gave an update and overview of Las Vegas' tourism economy where it is expected that 2016 will be a record breaking tourism year. He gave an overview of the convention center expansion as well as gave a few thoughts on the proposed football stadium Sheldon Adelson is looking to build.
