Community Service:
Happy Feet
Every month during the school year the Las Vegas Southwest Rotary Club gives children that appear to need shoes, a new pair of shoes and 3 pairs of socks, once a month during the school year. The recipient school selects these students for us. The shoes and socks are purchased from Payless Shoe Source and delivered to the school by Rotarians who help each student try on the new shoes for size. Payless Shoe Source selects the style of shoe based on the sex of the student.
For the past few years Ruby Thomas Elementary has been our selected school. We distribute and fit about 1,000 pairs of shoes during a school year. It is a fun and gratifying program. Sometimes we notice that we are replacing shoes that we distibuted the previous year. The kids are happy, grateful and excited - and so are we.
Feed the Homeless
Our "Feed the Homeless" hands-on project is a partnership with the Amazing Grace program at Christ Episcopal Church (corner Maryland Pkwy and St. Louis) which includes a clothing and cosmetics/sundries drive. Each month when we arrive we set up tables and chairs, sort clothing for distribution and get the kitchen ready to serve. We distribute clothing at 5:30 and start serving dinner for folks at 6:00, clean up and we finish by 7:00. We provide the food and serve more than a hundred people every time. Some of our members make it a community service event for their own companies, the extra help really does make a difference.
Christmas in April
This is a program that many community service organizations partipate in, we spend a day repairing and restoring a home for a person in need. The home usually belongs to an elderly or disabled person. We pool our resources and provide painting, landscaping, construction and repair to the home. Las Vegas Southwest Rotary members spend the day hands-on assisting the professionals to give the homeowner a much needed home makeover. |
